Brake
rotors are the flat metal discs found on the wheel. When you press on
the brake pedal, the brake pads squeeze to slow the rotor, which
eventually stops the wheel. They will wear down over time, so changing
rotors in the Wakefield, Reading, and Danvers areas is necessary every
now and then.

For your convenience, Ira Subaru service technicians can change rotors here in our service center. However, you may be wondering how to do it from the comfort of your own home. Continue reading this guide to learn more about rotors, why they need to be changed, and how to change them!
Installing New Brake Rotors
Brake
rotors won't last forever. If your brake pedal is shaking when you
press down, or you're hearing loud grinding noises when pressing the
brake, it's likely time to press the reset button on the rotors. To
replace them, just follow these steps:
- Start by loosening the lug nuts on the wheel. Use a jack to bring the vehicle up, and secure the car with jack stands and wheel stops.
- Press the brake pedal 20 times to release any pressure, then remove the lug nuts and the wheel. The brake caliper fasteners will need to be removed as well; they can be found on the rear part of the caliper.
- Unbolt the caliper from the two bracket bolts. These larger bolts may require a long wrench to loosen them.
- Remove the caliper and hang it from the strut.
- Take off the brake rotor from the wheel studs. Look at the rotors to ensure the old one is the same as the new one in terms of diameter.
- Slide the caliper back on the rotor, but note that the caliper piston might need to be compressed for the caliper to slide back on.
- Clean off the caliper guide pins and lubricate them before sliding them back in. This lets the caliper and brakes function as they should, even when temperatures increase.
- Make sure to add brake fluid to the reservoir, then check the brake pedal to ensure it's working as it should.
- Put the wheel back on and test your brakes before you make your next trip.
