About the Peabody Essex Museum
The Peabody Essex Museum was founded in 1799 under the name of the East India Marine Society. This organization of Salem captains got together to present artifacts from sailors who traveled beyond the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn.
When you visit the East India Marine Hall at the museum, you can still view the earliest artifacts of the museum.
Over the years, the museum grew and eventually joined teams with the Essex Historical Society and the Essex County Natural History Society and many other organizations. Finally, in 1992, the Peabody Essex Museum became what it is today: a cultural center for the arts, science, and more.
Some of the many accomplishments of the museum include:
- More than 840,00 works of art
- More than 400,000 books, manuscripts, and documents
- Complete Qing Dynasty house
