In 1950, Fuji Sangyo Co, Ltd was divided into 12 different corporations. Between 1953 and 1955, six of these merged to become Fuji Heavy Industries. By 1955, Fuji Heavy Industries was known as Subaru. The first car built under this name was the Subaru 1500 in 1954.

Mazda started out in 1920 as a machine tools manufacturer. Back then, it was called the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd. It was later renamed Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. and, in 1931, began manufacturing motor vehicles. In 1984, the Mazda name was officially adopted as the name of the company.
