Oil
is what keeps your engine's parts lubricated and cool, ensuring the
engine can stay healthy and keep your car running near Wakefield,
Reading, and Danvers for many years.
If your vehicle is in need of an oil change, you may be wondering what type to use. Below, we'll go over what the best oil for Subaru is by covering three models:
- Crosstrek
- Outback
- Impreza
Discover what kind of oil each car uses, then contact Ira Subaru to schedule an oil change near you!
Oil Type & Capacity for Subaru Crosstrek
For
the Subaru Crosstrek, you'll want to use Subaru-approved engine oil.
However, if that's not available, the following is good to use:
- API (American Petroleum Institute) classification SN with the words "RESOURCE CONSERVING"
- ILSAC (International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee) GF-5, which is identified with an ILSAC certification mark
Synthetic oil-specifically 0W-20-is highly recommended for optimal engine performance and protection. If synthetic oil isn't available at the time of an oil change, 5W-30 conventional oil may be used instead. However, it should be replaced with synthetic oil at the next change.
As for engine oil capacity, the Crosstrek can hold 4.7 quarts of oil. Keep in mind, though, that this quantity is only an estimate, and is based on when the oil is changed with an oil filter. After filling the engine with oil, the level should be checked to make sure it's at the optimal amount.
Oil Type & Capacity for Subaru Outback
Like
the Crosstrek, the oil for the Subaru Outback needs to be an API
classification SN or ILSAC GF-5. Also like the Crosstrek, the Outback
engine should be filled with 0W-20 synthetic oil. If synthetic oil isn't
available, you can use either 5W-30 or 5W-40 conventional oil. However,
as suggested above, the engine oil should be replaced with synthetic
oil during the next change.
In this automobile, the oil capacity depends on which type of engine you have. For the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, the capacity is 5.1 quarts; for the 3.6L 6-cylinder engine, the capacity is 6.9 quarts. Again, you'll want to check the level to make sure you don't have too much or not enough oil.
Oil Type & Capacity for Subaru Impreza
The final vehicle we'll cover is the Subaru Impreza. This sedan follows suit with the automobiles mentioned above. If a Subaru-approved oil isn't available, you can use the API classification SN with "RESOURCE CONSERVING" or the ILSAC GF-5 oil.
As far as engine oil goes, the Impreza will match the Crosstrek. This means that 0W-20 synthetic oil is recommended, but 5W-30 conventional oil can be used if needed. Just be sure to use synthetic at the next change to help keep the vehicle performing well for many years and miles.
The engine oil capacity of this car is 4.7 quarts when you change both the oil and oil filter. However, if you're just adding the oil from a low level to the full level, the capacity is 1.1 quarts.

As you can see, each Subaru model uses pretty much the same type of oil, just at different capacities. Regardless, you'll want to use the appropriate engine oil to help keep your automobile in peak performance.
